Record of Achievement

For information about the Record of Achievement scroll down the page or skip to a particular section by selecting one of the following links.

About the Record of Achievement (ROA)

When a learner enrols in a programme that leads to NQF credits, their details and registration fee are forwarded to NZQA. They will be registered on the NQF for a Record of Achievement and given a unique learner identification number called a National Student Number (NSN).

Learners can accumulate Framework credits over a number of years and from many providers until they have completed a qualification. An ROA provides an employer with a profile of a learner's achievements.

If you are a student who is not yet registered on the Framework, you can access the Registration form in Adobe PDF.

How do learners receive a copy of their ROA?

Learners are entitled to one free copy of their ROA, if they have gained some credits in the previous year. If a learner did not complete any credits in the previous year, they are not entitled to the annual free copy of their Record of Achievement.

To request the annual free copy of the RoA, learners need to make a a request by logging on through the online Learner log in area or by calling the NZQA Call Centre on 04 463 3000. This facility is available from 1 February to 30 June each year.

You can order additional copies of your ROA at a cost of $15 - download the application form in Word or PDF

You can also access your results through the website using your NSN (National Student Number) and password. This means you can gain a fresh copy of your current results before applying for a new job or enrolling in a new programme.

However, the document on the website will not be an official transcript - a copy of this will still need to be obtained from NZQA as above.

Provider access to ROA

Providers have log in access to unit standard results on the website. The Privacy Act has been pivotal to developing provider ROA log in.

The ROA log in does not provide access to the ROA database, but to a derivative file that holds the necessary data.

How do learners know what they have achieved?

Over 18,000 national standards have been registered and packaged into a range of National Certificates, National Diplomas and other national qualifications.

Each standard describes what you need to know or what you must be able to achieve. Standards are registered for all areas of learning, including conventional secondary school subjects.

More familiar terms are:

  • unit standards - developed by experts in their fields, for each industry and general learning area.
  • achievement standards - currently used only in school curriculum subjects, for the National Certificate of Educational Achievement.

Each registered standard has a credit value and is registered on one of the Framework's ten levels. As standards are achieved, credits will be listed on the Record of Achievement, held on a national database by NZQA.

What are the costs?

Learners pay a $25 registration fee to join NZQA's national database. This is a one-off payment.

Then there is a fee of $1 per credit for each credit achieved. This covers the cost of moderation and keeping the standards up to date. Generally providers will pass on this credit fee to NZQA on behalf of learners.

Learners in schools have a different fee structure.

How do learners receive their certificate or diploma?

When a learner has completed a National Certificate or National Diploma, they (or their provider) must notify the Authority in writing so their qualification can be included on their Record of Achievement.

The cost of a certificate or diploma is $15.00. This certification fee must be included with a completed application to the Authority - download the application form here in MS Word or PDF .

What types of qualifications can be gained?

All credits for registered standards lead to National Certificates, National Diplomas or other national qualifications. The specific requirements for each qualification can be found under National Qualifications Framework.

Result Notice

All credits are recorded on the Record of Achievement and learners also receive a separate result notice.

Any career-related standards that completed outside school, for example through a polytechnic or at work, will also be recorded.

What about qualifications gained before the start of the Framework?

Any qualifications gained before the implementation of the National Qualifications Framework remain valid but they will not appear on the Record of Achievement.

Will the ROA be accepted nationally and internationally?

Yes. The Framework is fully endorsed and supported by New Zealand's education and training providers, employers, unions and national industry and professional groups. It is the New Zealand Government's national qualification system.

It is also internationally compatible with systems being established in the United Kingdom, Europe, South Africa, Australia and North America.
